What is Swedish massage?

The Swedish massage is a therapy capable of combining the technical principles of most Western massages. The Swedish massage includes the three types of strokes or movements that are common denominators in all massages. Specifically; effleurage, petrissage, and tapotement. Strokes, kneading, and vibration are movements used in any type of massage, with greater or lesser intensity. The Swedish massage combines them in its different styles to primarily cause muscle relaxation.

Uses and Benefits of Swedish Massage

Swedish massage therapies aim for relaxation as the main goal. The versatility of Swedish massage and its intensity are entirely dependent on the needs of the client in question, which is why the observation process and user diagnosis are so important.

Reduction of stress levels: The combination of movements such as stroking, vibration, percussion, and kneading is adjusted with different intensities in order to maximize the timeless focus on the process, resulting in a substantial decrease in the stress levels of the user enjoying it.

Muscle relaxation: While Swedish massage is not the most suitable for treating muscle pain caused by knots and temporary issues in the inner layers of muscles, it is a non-invasive therapy effective for achieving muscle relaxation in cases of non-extensive tension over time.

Reduction of anxiety: The Swedish massage allows a body-mind connection in a total relaxation environment, reducing anxiety levels with almost immediate effects. Most clients at our Medical SPA in Miami choose Swedish massage in situations of stress or tension caused by circumstantial factors.

How is a Swedish massage performed?

Massage therapies generally have 3 fundamental stages: preparation and introduction, where the client's comfort and involvement are pursued, the technical development, where the therapist applies the technique as previously planned, and the final relaxation or gradual reintegration. Regardless of these being the three main stages of a massage, each type of massage is treated with a specific method at our luxury Medical SPA in Miami.

Step 1 Swedish Massage Preparation

The preparation for a Swedish massage session begins before the client's arrival, as the setup of the environment is crucial for the development of a successful massage. The atmosphere will be conditioned with warm lighting, soft, hypoallergenic scents to avoid uncomfortable reactions during the Swedish massage session, as well as with indirect music, instrumental, based on aerophones.

Although most massage therapists in Miami focus their attention on the technical development of the space during the preparation of a Swedish massage, at our Medical SPA we complement the preparation with an introductory stage that does not end until we achieve the client's empathy and involvement in the massage process.

It is essential, before any approach, to have explained to the client the steps for the development of the Swedish massage, help them focus on the moment, understand their ailments, and attempt to touch key points of these ailments at an exploratory level. Failing to pay enough attention to the first stage of the Swedish massage would result in a session where it would be difficult for the client to meet their expectations.

Step 2 Swedish Massage Technique

The Swedish massage combines the main technical movements from most types of massages. To relieve tension points identified by the client, the vibration technique is used. Vibratory movements in a massage session consist of applying up-and-down motions with the fingertips and heel of the hand. The goal is to focus attention on the tension or pain points previously identified.

To activate or accelerate blood flow through a Swedish massage, percussion movements are used. During this stage of the Swedish massage, the goal is to dissipate the points where the previous movements have concentrated during the massage session. The dissipation is achieved with repeated and gentle taps combined with short and precise kneading movements.

If the client expresses sharp pains or prolonged muscle tension points over time, our professional massage therapists will apply friction and kneading movements with a bit more depth during the Swedish massage session.

Step 3 Post-Massage Reintegration

Post-Swedish massage reintegration is a gradual process, where the client gradually reintegrates with the guidance of the professional massage therapist at our medical spa. It is essential to care for and guide the reintegration process after a Swedish massage, as disrupting the reintegration timing directly affects the overall Swedish massage experience. The reintegration should be relaxed, without abrupt changes in the environment.

Why is it called Swedish massage?

The Swedish massage was developed as a relaxation technique and body care in the 19th century. It is called Swedish massage because its creator was a Swedish citizen, Per Henrik Ling. Most relaxing massage types have their origins in Eastern culture, and the Swedish massage technique is no different. Per Henrik, the inventor of Swedish massage, was inspired by Eastern massage techniques, primarily Chinese massage techniques such as TUI NA.

How long does a Swedish massage last?

The Swedish massage is a relaxation therapy and should not interfere with the timing of any of the steps to develop a successful Swedish massage. For this reason, it is recommended that the Swedish massage last between 55 and 60 minutes. As we explained earlier, at our medical spa in Miami, the time distribution for the development of a Swedish massage is approximately 10 minutes of preparation and another 10 minutes of reintegration. The rest of the time will consist of applying movements and types of massage techniques to achieve the client's goals.

Where to get a Swedish massage?

It is true that Swedish massage can be performed anywhere, however, the experience of the Swedish massage is entirely conditioned by the relaxation process and initial preparation. For this reason, the results of the Swedish massage cannot be compared when performed at home with the development of a Swedish massage at our medical spa.

Physically, the Swedish massage should be performed on a consistent surface. At our medical spa in Miami, the Swedish massage is developed on a Thai massage table, fully prepared to achieve the postures guided by the certified professional massage therapist who will apply the Swedish massage.

Is Swedish massage performed on the entire body?

The Swedish massage is performed on the entire body. However, a Swedish massage session can be conditioned or focused on specific goals identified during the exploration or preparation stage of the Swedish massage. For example, a client with localized muscle tension will likely receive more intense friction and kneading movements in these areas, as well as percussion-type point dissipation movements. The intensity or focus on the massage of these specific points may reduce massage time on other key areas. At our medical spa, you will always be able to count on customized massage times and relaxation therapy planning based on your goals and interests during each massage session.

Does Swedish massage heal muscle pain?

We should not confuse the Swedish massage with sports massages, such as deep tissue massage. When dealing with intense and prolonged pain over time, it is recommended to replace the Swedish massage session with a more immersive technique involving movements and manipulation of the front areas of the muscles. However, the Swedish massage can help relieve pain caused by circumstantial muscle spasms and other frequent muscle discomforts.

When is it recommended to give a Swedish massage?

It is highly recommended to take massage sessions on a continuous basis. Although the effects of a single massage over time could be very surprising, to maintain the state of relaxation and body-mind connection, it is recommended to have massage sessions frequently.

Still, there are some symptoms or discomforts that are clear motivations for attending a Swedish massage session, including localized pain from arthritis, muscle spasms, muscle cramp sensations, and no less important, when we feel completely fatigued or experience prolonged stress over time.

Can a Swedish massage be performed at home?

In Miami, we all lead very hectic lives. Precisely the lack of time has developed a large wave of massage services at home in Miami. However, we should not forget that it is precisely this lack of time that motivates the need for massages that allow us to take a pause, relieve our tensions, and especially stress. If there are no other options, you can book a home massage in Miami, however, our recommendation as a medical spa is to choose an environment different from the one you associate with high levels of stress. At our medical spa, we will perform an introductory process for each massage that will allow you to associate our medical spa with your moment of disconnection. Also, our certified massage therapists will guide you through the process, taking the necessary time and remaining relaxed in the medical spa, without any prior travel that could affect the energy transmitted through the massage.
